Electrophysiology Cath Lab Suites

The Jeffrey M. Carlton Heart & Vascular Institute is home to eight cardiac catheterization labs (cath lab); six at Hoag Hospital Newport Beach and two at Hoag Hospital Irvine. A cath lab is where physicians can diagnose or treat heart conditions, such as cardiac arrhythmias, through a less-invasive catheter procedure instead of surgery.

Allan & Sandy Fainbarg Electrophysiology Cath Lab Suite

State-of-the-Art EP Cath Lab Suite – First of its kind in Orange County!

The newly renovated and expanded The Jeffrey M. Carlton Heart & Vascular Institute in Newport Beach is home to the innovative Allan & Sandy Fainbarg Electrophysiology Cath Lab Suite, in a 12,740 square-foot unit including 12 new pre-and post-procedure beds.

This is the first Electrophysiology (EP) Cath Lab Suite installation to offer the complete integration of leading-edge EP technology with a special focus on arrhythmia management, to treat conditions such as atrial fibrillation. This progressive technology enables Hoag physicians and clinicians to thoroughly evaluate and diagnose a full spectrum of cardiovascular diseases, as well as provide the latest in state-of-the-art treatment options. The integration of these elements achieves the highest level of efficiency and safety for the patient to support the best possible outcomes.

Most Advanced EP (Electrophysiology) Capability

The space is designed to enhance the efficiency of all technologies in a patient-centered fashion. Leading-edge EP systems are brought together into one control pad at the physician’s fingertips, in line of sight with the patient, through a customizable 55” monitor.

Zero Gravity

The new suite also includes the West Coast’s first suspended “Zero Gravity” radiation system comprised of radiation shield aprons and face covers suspended from a movable track mounted on the suite’s ceiling. Not only does the Zero Gravity shield provide a higher level of protection, but the suspended feature also makes a big difference in terms of the clinical team’s comfort during lengthy procedures – replacing the 20-pound vests the clinical staff wears using fluoroscopy. This allows the staff to focus their energy on the delivery of exceptional patient care.

Ambient Experience

While some procedures require general anesthesia, the majority use mild sedation, meaning patients are aware of the procedure and their surroundings. This new suite offers a relaxing environment which enhances the patient’s overall experience. Patients can select relaxing visual images such as the beach, mountains or other type of setting. These images are then projected onto the ceiling of the EP suite and are accompanied by lights and sound, to create a soothing, more comfortable atmosphere.

Procedures

Hoag’s cath suites are used for a wide array of procedures to diagnose and treat heart and vascular conditions, including cardiac arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation and supraventricular tachycardia (SVT). The EP Cath Suite is focused on EP procedures but can handle any type of heart catheterization.
