Support Groups

Cancer Support Groups

Hoag Family Cancer Institute support groups provide mutual support and information for cancer patients and their families. Groups are facilitated by licensed clinical social workers and oncology nurses. Discussion is focused on current issues faced by cancer patients and their support network. There is no charge for the following groups.

In addition to the support groups listed below, Hoag offers free cancer education programs to support patients in their quest for knowledge. For more information, please call 949-722-6237.

Diabetes Support Groups

Regular peer support groups are held for people with type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes to allow patients opportunities to share their challenges and successes with diabetes with others like themselves in a comfortable setting.

Digestive Health Support Groups

IBD Support Group - A support group for those with inflammatory bowel disease which provides mutual support and information for IBD patients and their families.

Heart and Vascular Support Group

Heart Matters Support Group – Join our monthly support group for the cardiac patient, their partner, family members, or caregivers. Our Licensed Clinical Social Worker Stephanie Fermelia will discuss topics such as managing stress, depression and anxiety, handling anger, and coping with lifestyle changes and loss. This group meets on the second Thursday of every month. This support group is currently being held virtually. Please register to access Zoom link for participation.

Neurosciences Support Groups

Better Breathers Club - Better Breather's Club is a program of education and support sponsored by Hoag Hospital and supported by the American Lung Association. It's designed for people with breathing problems and their families and is open to the public. No prior sign up is necessary. For the full schedule at both Hoag Hospital Newport Beach click here.

Brain Aneurysm / AVM – Brain aneurysm survivors, Shail Lal, M.D. and Chris MacDuff, host a support group for those diagnosed or treated for an aneurysm or arteriovenous malformations (AVM) of the brain. Meetings are scheduled for the first Wednesday of every other month at 6:30pm at Hoag Conference Center. For more information, please call Hoag Neurosciences Administration at 949-764-5942.

Brain Tumor – Held on the third Wednesday of each month from 3–5pm at the Advanced Technology Pavilion. This is both an educational and support group for anyone diagnosed with a primary brain tumor or metastatic disease. Family and friends are welcome to join us. Epilepsy – The Epilepsy Center at Hoag Hospital offers interactive support groups​ for all adolescent and adult epilepsy patients in both English and Spanish. Join us for group discussions to help you better understand and cope with epilepsy. The support group meets on the first Wednesday of every month from 6:30–8:00 pm at Pickup Family Neurosciences Institute Conference Room (3rd Floor of Hoag Conference Center), as well as another group at CHOC Children's Hospital the second Friday of each month from 7-8:30 p.m. For more information, please call 949-764-6066.

Insomnia – Pickup Family Neurosciences Institute offers a complementary Insomnia Support Group for patients dealing with Insomnia. Topics include: general insomnia information, sleep hygiene, relaxation and meditation tips.

The support group meets the first Thursday of every month from 6-7 p.m. at Hoag Health Center-Newport Beach in the Mary & Dick Allen Diabetes Center, Classroom 2.

Parkinson's/Movement Disorders – As part of Hoag Hospital's commitment to better serve its community with the highest level of quality care, it's proud to sponsor weekly support groups and seminars for patients with Parkinson's, their families, caregivers and medical professionals. Sleep Apnea Health Awareness Groups

Alert, Well and Keeping Energetic (AWAKE) – AWAKE, a health awareness group network from the American Sleep Apnea Association, provides education about healthy sleeping, the latest products for Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines, masks, accessories and more. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss concerns they are having with their sleep and address any issues if they are using CPAP.

Held quarterly on the second Wednesday of the month from 6 – 7 p.m. at Hoag Health Center-Newport Beach in the Mary & Dick Allen Diabetes Center, Classroom 2.

Stroke - The Stroke support group is held on the fourth Thursday of every month from 2 – 3:30 p.m. at Hoag Conference Center. For more information, please call 949-764-1454.

Pastoral Care Bereavement Support Groups

The Pastoral Care Department at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian offers the following Bereavement Program free of charge to the community. The program provides support, education, and guidance for people in our community throughout the grieving process during this very difficult time. For more information, please call 949-764-8358.

Facing Forward - Level 1 This first level group meets on Thursday evenings from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m.in the Patty & George Hoag Cancer Center Auditorium. It is a general bereavement group for participants over the age of 18, offering support to those who have lost a loved one. Registration is not required. Life Goes On - Level 2 This second level group meets weekly, for 8 consecutive weeks , in the Patty & George Hoag Cancer Center Conference Room A, and attendance of Level 1 is mandatory. Please call 949-764-8358 to register for this class and obtain session dates. Regular attendance is required.This group provides a forum to address grief issues, identify individual barriers, and develop tools for healing throughout the grieving process.

Growth Through Grief - Level 3 This third level group meets on Friday evenings from 5:00 - 6:30 p.m., in the Patty & George Hoag Cancer Center Auditorium, and attendance at Level 1 and 2 is mandatory. This group provides support, education, and guidance as you work through the reintegration phase of grief. For more information or to register, please call 949-764-8358.

Religious Services

  • Hospital-wide Holiday Worship: Christmas, Easter and Imposition of Ashes
  • Sacramental Services: Baptism, Communion, Annointing and Imposition of Ashes for Ash Wednesday
  • Literature distribution/Other items: Bibles and rosaries
  • Closed circuit television devotions and religious programs to patient rooms on Channel 1.

Women's Health Support Groups

Breastfeeding Support Group

The Breastfeeding Support Group provides support and information to all new moms, and is facilitated by an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) registered nurse. Together, moms will have the opportunity to share experiences in a supportive environment. This support group will be held virtually via Zoom. Instructions on how to access Zoom and meeting login details will be provided through email confirmation, once participants have completed the registration process. This group will meet weekly, and there are two support group options listed below. Registration is required. Register Online. For questions, call 949-764-BABY (2229).

August Support Group
​To join the August Breastfeeding Support Group after August 4, please call 800-400-HOAG (4624) to register by phone. Support group meeting dates include, August 4, August 11, August 18 and August 25.

September Support Group
By signing up for September 1 you will automatically be enrolled in all support group meeting dates that include, Septemer 1, September 8, September 15, September 22 and September 29.

Pregnancy & Infant Loss

Hoag’s Pregnancy and Infant Loss Support Group is facilitated by a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with many years of experience in working with families who have experienced a loss. The group is open to anyone who has suffered a loss, including those whose loss did not occur at Hoag. Extended family members are welcome to attend with you. Parents who have experienced a loss after a difficult decision are also welcome. To learn more, please call 949-764-6864.

Pregnancy After A Loss Support Group

This support group is for women and couples who lost a baby during pregnancy or infancy and are now pregnant. The group is facilitated by a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) who specializes in pregnancy after a loss. To learn more, please call 949-764-4540 or click here.

Postpartum Adjustment Support Group

This support group is for new mothers experiencing the baby blues, or are having difficulty adjusting to motherhood. This free ongoing group focuses on teaching positive coping skills and providing support and education. The support group is facilitated by a licensed therapist and meets Mondays from 6 p.m. – 7 p.m and Wednesdays from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.. Babies and support persons welcomed! Mental Health Center Support Groups

​Women’s Support Group

The Women’s Support Group* will focus on empowering participants and improving quality of life by enhancing their self-awareness in psychological and psychosocial issues within the context of their gender roles. All groups will meet at 307 Placentia, Suite #100-B, Newport Beach, CA 92663.
