Breast Pain
Experiencing pain in your breasts
Many women experience pain in their breast and most often breast pain is
not a sign of breast cancer.
Breast pain refers to any discomfort, pain or tenderness in the breast
or underarm region and may occur for many reasons.
Common causes include:
- Hormone level changes
- Menstruation or Menopause
- Pregnancy
- Fibrocystic breast changes
- Medications
- Shingles
- Caffeine intake
- Breast Infection - A breast infection is usually caused by common bacteria
found on normal skin. Breast infections cause breast pain, swelling, redness,
lumps and fever.
Call your health care provider if you have:
- Bloody or clear discharge from your nipple
- Given birth within the last week and your breasts are swollen or hard,
particularly if this is asymmetric
- Noticed a new lump with the pain that does not go away after your menstrual period
- Persistent, unexplained breast pain
- Signs of a breast infection, including pain, local redness, nipple discharge or fever
