Father Gregory Boyle founded Homeboy Industries in 2001 at Delores Mission in East Los Angeles. The independent non-profit organization is the largest gang intervention, rehabilitation and re-entry program in the United States. Bethany Knapp, chair of the 28th Annual Founders’ Celebration Brunch feels a personal drive to continue to advance Hoag’s premier cancer treatment center.

“Cancer touches so many people in our lives and it means so much to me that Hoag is on the forefront of treating cancer and providing world-class care and support to patients and their families,” she said.

Knapp was thrilled when Father Boyle agreed to speak at this year’s brunch.

“I have heard him speak and he is a phenomenal man who will inspire all of us to serve our communities,” she said.

Circle 1000’s 28th Annual Founders’ Celebration Brunch is an inspirational and priceless opportunity for cancer survivors, family, friends and Hoag supporters to connect and commemorate the strides made in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

“Circle 1000 is an inspiring story of one individual who turned around a cancer diagnosis to bring awareness, better treatments and cure rates to the thousands of patients who come to the Hoag Family Cancer Institute,” said Flynn Andrizzi, Ph.D., Hoag Hospital Foundation President and Hoag Senior Vice President. “We are grateful for Circle 1000 and its founder, Sandy Sewell for their generosity to the Hoag Hospital Foundation. Their commitment to cancer care has made it possible for Hoag to purchase new technology, advance nursing education and conduct important clinical research.”

Newport Beach resident and breast cancer survivor, Sandy Sewell founded Circle 1000 in 1987 by gathering a group of friends to each contribute a minimum of $1,000 annually, and tasked with asking their own circle of friends to participate. From the powerful bonds of friendship, Circle 1000 grew to more than 1,000 friends who have collectively raised more than $15 million for Hoag.
