Becker’s Hospital Review again named Hoag to its list of 100 Hospitals & Health Systems with Great Neurosurgery and Spine Programs.
Hoag is a three-hospital health system with membership in the St. Joseph Hoag Health Alliance, supports a comprehensive neurosurgery spine program with 16 physician leaders who oversee a variety of related services. In 2016, the health system’s Hoag Orthopedic Institute reported 1,171 inpatient spine surgeries with the average length of stay hitting 2.2 days, while Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian reported an average length of stay at 4.1 days and major complication rate of 3.5 percent. In February 2016, Hoag Memorial became the first hospital in Orange County to use 3-D simulation software to assist in brain surgeries and plans to open California’s first spinal robotics program in early 2018.
The organizations featured on this year’s list have extensive neuroscience and spine programs, providing treatment and cutting edge research into neurosurgical disorders. Many hospitals and health systems featured have earned top honors for medical excellence, outcomes and patient experience in their spine and brain surgery departments.

The editorial team examined U.S. News & World Report national rankings for neurology and neurosurgery; CareChex national and regional rankings for neurological care and Blue Distinction Center for Spine Surgery designation to develop this list.
