Expert Spine Care
Hoag Neurosurgery Spine Program offers an experienced multidisciplinary
team of board-certified neurologists, neurosurgeons, physical therapists,
pain management specialists and dedicated spine care nurses who work together
to provide personalized patient-centered care.
Led by Neurosurgeon Burak Ozgur, M.D., Hoag’s expert spine care team
works collaboratively to determine the best course of treatment for each
individual patient. Having a specialized team that’s highly trained
in all aspects of innovative spine care is a unique distinction that sets
Hoag apart from many other centers and provides patients with the highest
quality care, as well as exceptional clinical outcomes.
Program Leadership
Burak M. Ozgur, M.D.
Chief of Service, Hoag Neurosurgery Spine Program
Burak M. Ozgur, M.D., is a neurosurgeon and Chief of Service for the Neurosurgical
Spine Program at Hoag. Dr. Ozgur is double board-certified by the American
Board of Neurological Surgery and the American Board of Spine Surgery.
Additionally, he completed a rare dual orthopedic surgery-neurosurgery
spine fellowship. He specializes in minimally invasive surgical techniques
for common degenerative and complex disorders of the spine including tumors,
scoliosis, and trauma. Dr. Ozgur also has a strong interest in stem cell
research, spinal biomechanics, and innovative minimally invasive spine
surgery development and research.
Michael Brant-Zawadzki, MD, FACR

Executive Medical Director, Pickup Family Neurosciences Institute
The Ron and Sandi Simon Endowed Chair
Michael Brant-Zawadzki, M.D., is the first Executive Medical Director
of the Neurosciences Institute at Hoag, and holds the Ron and Sandi Simon
Endowed Chair. He also serves as an Adjunct Clinical Professor in Neuroradiology
at Stanford University. Dr. Brant-Zawadzki trained in radiology and neuroradiology
at Stanford University Medical Center. He then spent six years as a full-time
Professor on the Neuroradiology faculty at the University of California
San Francisco Medical Center, focusing on MRI development and spine imaging.
Dr. Brant-Zawadzki has authored and co-authored more than 250 papers in
professional journals, 17 textbooks, and numerous book chapters.

Neuro Spine Nurse Navigators: Your guide throughout the process
Clinical nurse navigators provide education and support to patients and
their families,
to help them chart a course through the health care system. They assist
patients in understanding diagnoses and treatment options, provide guidance
on selecting a specialty physician or surgeon, aid in scheduling surgery
and making pre- and post-treatment appointments. They also assess complex
psychosocial needs, and help to appropriately coordinate resources.

Neurosurgery - Hoag Neurosurgery Spine Program is a recognized leader in accurately diagnosing
neck and back pain, while providing the most advanced non-surgical and
minimally invasive treatment options available.

Neurology - The Neurology Program at Hoag treats disorders affecting the nervous system,
including conditions of the brain, spinal cord and nerves. These can include
headache disorders, infections of the brain and peripheral nervous system,
as well as speech and language disorders.

Pain Medicine - The Pain Medicine Program at Hoag focuses on a comprehensive approach to
pain management, treating various types of chronic pain including chronic
pain, back pain, cancer pain, orofacial pain and headaches.

Physical Therapy - Hoag physical therapists are specifically trained to improve movement,
restore function and/or relieve pain. Hoag Rehabilitation Services are
geared toward both the inpatient and outpatient continuum of care.
