Pioneering Augmented Reality (AR) for Spine

Co-developed by neurosurgeons from Hoag’s Pickup Family Neurosciences Institute and medical visualization platform leader Surgical Theater, the recently FDA-cleared augmented reality (SyncAR) surgical navigator.

SyncAR for Spine utilizes 3D virtual reconstructions of CT and MRI images to enable detailed visualization of anatomic structures as well as the surgical tools and hardware. The data-rich hologram produces a life-like reconstruction of the spine to assist surgeons in making detailed pre-planned surgical decisions down to the millimeter. Using multiple displays within the AR goggles, 3D real-time feedback maximizes the accuracy of surgical precision and hardware placement.

Hoag’s fellowship-trained neurosurgeons utilize the SyncAR for Spine to offer patients several benefits, such as more efficient surgeries, streamlined surgical planning, less exposure to X-rays and optimal surgical precision.

This technology allows surgeons to operate with precision and efficiency, reducing need for x-rays, and minimizes pain and recovery time after surgery.


7D Flash Surgery

Surgical Navigation System Without Radiation

Hoag was the first hospital on the west coast to offer the 7D Surgical Flash Navigation System, an advanced, minimally invasive, robotic navigation platform for spine surgery.

As a rapid, radiation-free alternative to traditional image guided surgery, the 7D surgical system uses special cameras to analyze surface anatomy in just seconds using only visible light without radiation. This creates a full-color 3D image reconstruction consisting of hundreds of thousands of data points used for surgical navigation guiding our surgeons’ accuracy.
