Heart Valve Disease
Heart valve disease (also referred to as valvular heart disease or VHD)
describes a disorder in the opening or closing of a heart valve that results
in a disruption of blood flow to the body. When a heart valve does not
open properly, it is referred to as stenosis. A valve that does not close
properly causes a leak, which is called regurgitation.
The most common types of heart valve disease are
aortic valve disease and
mitral valve disease. Each can severely impact the heart’s function, which is why it’s
important for individuals who have any
symptoms or risk factors to seek care from an expert healthcare provider, such as the experts at the
Nancy and Bill Thompson Heart Valve Center.
