Why More Babies Are Born at Hoag Than Anywhere in Orange County

If you were born in Orange County, there is a good chance you were born at Hoag. For more than seven decades, more women have trusted Hoag to deliver their babies than any other hospital in the county – second-most in the state. In fact, Hoag has been recognized as high performing in maternity care by U.S. News & World Report.

And every day Hoag works to earn that trust by expanding and innovating the excellent care we offer to greet our newest members of the Hoag family.

“We hope that all deliveries are routine, but we are also well prepared for the un-routine. Because of our excellence in maternal-fetal medicine, our level III neonatal intensive care unit and our unique obstetrics emergency department, families can have confidence knowing that we are here and ready with high quality, family centered, multidisciplinary expert care,” said Vladana Milisavljevic, M.D., M.S., Al & Mary Ann Schoellerman Endowed Chair in Neonatology, and chief of neonatology and medical director of Hoag’s NICU.

This gives expecting mothers the peace of mind they need to focus on their growing family. To complement Hoag’s comprehensive maternity services in Newport Beach and Irvine, two maternal-fetal medicine clinics will be opened later this year. With philanthropic support, Hoag recently launched a Perinatal Nurse Navigator program to help expecting moms whose complex medical conditions require special care, planning and services in advance of delivery.

“With state-of-the-art imaging and cutting-edge treatment, moms turn to us for care they can trust,” said David Lagrew, M.D., chief of service for maternal fetal medicine at Hoag. “Whatever you need as an expecting mom, we have you covered.”

Whatever you need, and whenever you need it.

“Babies have their own timelines. That’s why we’re here around the clock,” said Rebecca Dominguez, M.D., medical director of Hoag’s Obstetrics Hospitalist Program, which staffs board certified obstetricians at Hoag’s OB Emergency Department 24/7. “If the baby doesn’t feel like waiting for mom’s doctor, we’re at the bedside, making sure that the health and safety of mom and baby come first.”

Elevated features of Hoag’s maternity services include:

  • Obstetrics Emergency Department: A unique emergency department dedicated solely to OB patients from 16 weeks and up who need to be seen for an OB-related urgent or emergency situation.
  • OB Hospitalists: More than 20 dedicated, OB specialists who are at the hospital to provide expert care to patients exactly when they need it.
  • High-risk OB Anesthesia Clinic: Our 24/7 clinic is designated as a Center of Excellence by the Society of Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology, a distinction given to nationalleaders that set the benchmark for all other hospitals in the country.
  • Level III NICU in Newport Beach and Special Care Nursery in Irvine: Staffed by OB intensivists, dedicated anesthesiologist, respiratory therapists, perinatologists, and expert neonatologists from Children’s Hospital of Orange County, the exceptional neonatal team provides in-hospital around-the-clock care to attend to the most serious needs.
  • Magnet®-designated neonatal nurses: Magnet® recognition is the highest designation an organization can receive for professional nursing practice, and our ratio of neonatal nurses-to-patients is exceptionally low to assure excellent care.
