Hoag Cardiology: Experience. Outcomes. World-Class Recognition.

The Jeffrey M. Carlton Heart & Vascular Institute at Hoag is world-renowned for its care.

It is Orange County’s highest ranked hospital for cardiac services, according to the 2021-2022 U.S. News & World Report. Furthermore, Hoag is the only hospital in Orange County to achieve a high performing rating in every possible cardiac procedure and specialty: Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair, Aortic Valve Surgery, Heart Attack, Heart Bypass Surgery, Heart Failure and Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR).

In addition, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons ranks Hoag’s Cardiovascular Surgery Program in the highest category for quality and successful outcomes, achieved by only 1.8% of hospitals nationwide.

“People know about Hoag’s excellence, but they might not know that our cardiac team trains other hospitals in cutting-edge technology, or our work is on par with the most esteemed academic heart and vascular institutions in the nation,” said Asad Shah, M.D., F.A.C.C., F.A.C.S., co-director of Hoag Cardiac Surgery.

Valve Care

Hoag’s medical team offers incomparable experience and expertise in valve care. When it opened in 2006, the Nancy & Bill Thompson Heart Valve Center was the first heart valve center on the West Coast. As a leader in performing surgery on complicated cardiac surgical valves, Hoag was the first in Orange County to:

  • Offer minimally invasive robotic mitral valve repair.
  • Perform Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) and Transcatheter Edge to Edge Repair (TEER) for Mitral Valve.

“When it comes to diagnosing and treating mitral valve disease, Hoag is a nationally recognized leader, repairing more heart valves than 90% of all cardiac programs in the U.S.,” said Radhakrishan S. Gandhi, M.D., chair of the Hoag Cardiology Department. “Ninety-five percent of patients at Hoag who are eligible for a heart valve repair receive it, as opposed to a valve replacement. This leads to better, longer lasting outcomes.”

Aortic Care

The Elaine & Robert Matranga Aortic Center offers a multidisciplinary approach to caring for complex aortic diseases. This expertise led Hoag to become the referral center for aortic disease in Southern California and beyond. Hoag’s program includes world-class:

  • Active surveillance
  • Advanced treatment
  • Emergency care
  • Specialized care for individuals with Marfan Syndrome and related connective tissue disorders

Comprehensive Cardiac Care

Hoag’s specialists work as a team to provide expert care to diagnose, manage and treat all aspects of cardiovascular care. Some of Hoag’s signature programs and clinics include:

  • Arrhythmia Management Clinic: For over 20 years, Hoag has been a high-volume leader, enabling the cardiovascular team at Hoag to achieve a technical skill level not all facilities can match.
  • Advanced Heart Failure Program: In 2019, Hoag became the first facility in Orange County to offer Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) therapy for adults. This philanthropically funded technology has saved lives during the pandemic.

Outcomes

Hoag’s expertise, experience and leadership in technology has resulted in recognition by local and national organizations for having among the lowest mortality and readmission rates in the country.

Unsurprisingly, Hoag serves as a benchmark for other hospitals in terms of patient satisfaction. Our cardiac services receive a patient satisfaction score of 96.6, significantly higher than the national average.

“Many people in Orange County may not realize that the Carlton Heart & Vascular Institute is the highest-rated and highest-volume cardiovascular program in the region,” Dr. Shah said. “We are a national leader, and we’re just a short drive away.”
