Hoag’s reputation for high quality maternal health services is known
throughout Orange County and well beyond, thanks to renowned clinical
care, state-of-the-art facilities and word-of-mouth from the thousands
of families who choose Hoag for this special moment in their lives.
More than 6,300 babies were delivered at Hoag in 2016 alone, more than
at any other hospital in the county. Hoag’s
prenatal classes are among the most sought-after in the community. The coveted
Women’s Choice Award® recognized Hoag as one of America’s Best Hospitals for Obstetrics and
Parenting OC awarded Hoag “Best Birthing Center.”
Hoag’s portfolio of services from prenatal to postpartum care is
the most comprehensive in the region. And our evidence-based approach,
skilled nursing staff and physician leadership has led to a significant
reduction in our C-section rate and steady climb of our VBAC (vaginal
birth after cesarean) rate.
“Caesarean delivery is major surgery. It carries the risk of a variety
of complications, and newborns delivered by C-section are at risk of impaired
respiratory function. Studies have found that by reducing the rate of
non-medically necessary C-sections, we can improve the health and well-being
of mothers and newborns,” said
obstetrician Jeffrey Illeck, M.D. “Hoag is proud to be a leader in this change.”
This year, Hoag will expand its industry-leading
maternity program by offering OB education classes in
Irvine.
“Caring for our patients and touching their lives in meaningful ways,
is a profound privilege and an incredible source of pride for all of us
at Hoag,” said
Allyson M. Brooks, M.D., chief quality officer, Hoag, and the Ginny Ueberroth
Executive Medical Director Endowed Chair, Hoag Women’s Health Institute. “So many of our patients come to us from Irvine and South County.
We are excited to be able to offer them prenatal services closer to home.”
Some of the maternity services Hoag offers include a Level III NICU staffed
by CHOC physicians, offering the highest level of care to infants born
prematurely or with complications. The 21-bed NICU offers NICView cameras,
funded by philanthropy, so families and friends across the globe can see
and bond with the baby. Hoag also offers a full-time, on-site maternal
fetal medicine specialist who coordinates the care of delivering moms with
high-risk conditions, like
diabetes or high blood pressure.
To ensure expectant moms and their growing families get the right start
in this new, exciting chapter, Hoag provides a variety of
pre- and post-natal classes and programs. Additionally,
WOMANOLOGY® by Hoag in Newport Beach and Irvine offers prenatal yoga, sexual health counseling
and pelvic floor evaluation and therapy.
And Hoag takes seriously the depression and other mental health conditions
that can develop during pregnancy and postpartum. Several resources are
