Hoag Offers Specialized Help for a Specialized Problem

With an emphasis on minimally invasive techniques, Pickup Family Neurosciences Institute and Hoag Family Cancer Institute have long been known for innovation and award winning medicine. This past fall, Hoag became home to what is the county’s premier dedicated Pituitary Tumor Program, offering the most advanced care for one of the most sub-specialized areas of neurosurgery.

Located at the base of the brain, the pituitary gland is a dime-sized fragile structure that controls most of the body’s hormone production, and operating on it requires extreme precision. Robert G. Louis, M.D., program advisor of the Skull-Based and Pituitary Tumor Program at Pickup Family Neurosciences Institute, is a highly skilled neurosurgeon with the requisite experience and sub-specialized fellowship training in this highly complex field. He heads up a team which also involves ENT physicians, neuroradiologists, primary care physicians, obstetricians, and endocrinologists.

The techniques and technology Hoag now offers pituitary tumor patients are the most comprehensive and advanced in Orange County, and the results so far have been tremendous.

Instead of opening or drilling into the skull to reach a pituitary tumor, Dr. Louis is able to remove tumors through the nose in an Endoscopic Endonasal approach or Endoscopic Transsphenoidal surgery. He can also approach tumors through an incision in the eyebrow, known as Supraorbital Eyebrow Craniotomy; all of which are minimally invasive keyhole brain surgeries. The results are faster recovery times with fewer complications and better outcomes.
