IRVINE, Calif., March 6, 2018 — Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian today announced it will add maternity services at Hoag Hospital Irvine to accommodate the evolving trends in maternity care in one of the nation’s fastest-growing communities.
Hoag officials said maternity services at Hoag Hospital Irvine will offer a different kind of experience for lower risk pregnant women and their families. Women will labor, deliver and recover in the same room with family-centered design and home-like amenities. The 12-suite unit will be on the first floor of the hospital, located at 16200 Sand Canyon Ave.
”The needs and wants of expectant mothers are changing at a rapid pace. Hoag is mindful of these shifting expectations and will create an experience in Irvine that is relaxed, comfortable and appealing to local residents,” explained Allyson Brooks, M.D., Ginny Ueberroth Executive Medical Director Endowed Chair and Chief Quality Officer, Hoag Women’s Health Institute. “Studies of new mothers, including millennials and members of Gen X and Gen Z, revealed fascinating insight into what they want during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum. We’re taking this information and visiting many birth centers and hospitals across the nation to incorporate the best qualities and concepts into our offerings at Hoag Irvine.”
With the help of philanthropic support from the community, construction work on the 18,000-square-foot facility is scheduled to begin in March 2019. OB/GYN doctors, nurses and staff at Hoag Hospital Irvine will greet their first expectant parents in mid-2020 when the maternity suites officially open.
Dr. Brooks said Hoag has been planning for maternity services in Irvine for several years in response to the community’s rapid growth and corresponding health care needs. This growth in and around Irvine has resulted in an expanding population of households with young children. In fact, women ages 18 to 44 will represent an estimated 20 percent of Irvine’s population by 2021. In 2017, more than 6,800 babies were delivered at Hoag’s Newport Beach campus – and 34 percent of the new mothers were from the greater Irvine area.
”There is a clear need for these services in the heart of the community. As the master-planned city of Irvine continues to grow and mature, Hoag is committed to growing and maturing along with it,” Marcy Brown, vice president of Hoag Hospital Irvine and Ambulatory Services said. “Our planned maternity services are a major part of that commitment. Maternity services will add a new layer to the robust programs and services we already offer in Irvine. This core program will provide expectant families with excellent medical care and comprehensive pre- and post-natal care as they begin one of the most exciting chapters of their lives.”
Brown noted that Hoag Hospital Irvine is directly across the street from Hoag Health Center Irvine – Sand Canyon, which was designed as a community-centric health care “village” offering a wide range of health care services within minutes of tens of thousands of residents and employees.

Maternity services at Hoag Hospital Irvine will include 12 birthing suites with a warm, home-like aesthetic, two C-section operating rooms, and a nursery. In designing the space, Hoag officials said they are taking advantage of its ground-floor location to include a beautiful outdoor walking garden that will serve as a calming influence on expectant mothers, their partners and visitors.
