Tips to Stay Well During COVID-19

By Peter Dangvu, M.D., Hoag Medical Group Family Medicine Huntington Beach

For many patients, changes to everyday life due to the COVID-19 pandemic have made aspects of life more challenging affecting both physical and mental health. Here are some ways to try and counter this:

  1. Maintain a routine: Even though many people are working from home or not currently working, it is still important to continue to go to bed and wake up around the same time each day to help improve quality of sleep and prevent insomnia.
  2. Exercise: Regular exercise improves both physical and mental health. If gyms or pools are closed, take this opportunity to try something different. Start bike riding or try workouts that are readily available online and require little or no equipment. Hoag offers live stream and on-demand exercise classes on the Hoag YouTube channel. In addition to exercise classes, other presentations by Hoag providers and staff include nutrition, mindfulness, and more.
  3. Healthy nutrition: With people being home more often, many are finding it hard to sustain healthy eating habits. For some, this means eating more carbohydrates than usual, others might be drinking more alcohol. Plan meals ahead of time, making sure to include protein, fruits and vegetables.
  4. Stay connected: While we need to stay physically distant at this time, we still need to maintain relationships with friends and family. This can be done by phone, video chats or even meeting somewhere outdoors and staying 6 feet apart.
  5. Continue routine care: Medical offices have measures in place to keep patients safe during visits. Whether they are appointments for management of chronic conditions, like diabetes or high blood pressure, or visits for routine vaccines, it is important to keep your appointment with your physician. Many physicians are offering video visits, in addition to in-office visits.
