Investing in Irvine’s Health with New Programs and Services

Bringing technology and talent to Irvine, Hoag has become a trusted partner in this community’s health. With the expansion of some of Hoag’s most renowned specialty programs, and philanthropic support, the relationship continues to flourish.

That growth continues with the expansion of some of Hoag’s most renowned specialty programs, including neurosciences and diabetes care, as well as interventional cardiac and radiology services, endoscopy services and emergency department.

“Listening to the needs of the community, Hoag has established itself as an important partner in Irvine’s health,” said Marcy Brown, vice president of Hoag Hospital Irvine and Ambulatory Services. “We are not just setting up a shop here and there, but rather creating a comprehensive continuum of care that brings the preventative and specialty services that the community has been missing right where people need it most.”

Among the new offerings:

Emergency Department
In response to a growing community need and thanks in part to generous donor support, Hoag Hospital Irvine is expanding its Emergency Department (ED) to nearly five times its original size. Upon completion, the Irvine ED will be more than 17,000 square feet and will include 32 private treatment rooms, two triage areas, four fast-track stations, as well as additional staff and support areas.

The first phase will open in October 2018, and add 13,452 square feet and 24 private patient bays. Once the new wing is open in October, the existing ED space of 3,593-square-feet will be remodeled. The ED will continue to remain open during the expansion and renovation efforts.

“The growing Irvine population has outpaced the capacity of the emergency department, with visits doubling since the hospital opened in in 2010,” said Karin Reed, M.D., medical director, Irvine Emergency Department. “We are proud of the staff and medical team that have kept the emergency department open throughout the expansion process and are extremely pleased to introduce this needed resource to our community later this year.”

Memory & Cognitive Disorders
Hoag’s pioneering comprehensive and preventative neurological care has grown in Irvine with the addition of Greg Whitman, M.D., a board certified neurologist, to the team.

Dr. Whitman will provide clinical evaluation and comprehensive management of Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders as part of Pickup Family Neurosciences Institute’s Memory & Cognitive Disorders Program at Hoag Health Center Irvine – Sand Canyon.

“Annual memory checks are as important as annual physicals, and they can help to detect problems at their earliest stages,” said William R. Shankle, M.S., M.D., F.A.C.P., program director, and the Judy & Richard Voltmer Endowed Chair in Memory and Cognitive Disorders Program at the Pickup Family Neurosciences Institute at Hoag. “Dr. Whitman’s expertise and efforts to expand our program will be a valuable resource for the community of Irvine.”

Diabetes Care
The Mary & Dick Allen Diabetes Center has opened a second location at Hoag Health Center Irvine – Woodbridge, offering clinical care, as well as educational and support services to meet the needs of the community. One of the most anticipated programs is the Ueberroth Program for Women with Diabetes (Sweet Success) to help prevent and manage gestational diabetes during pregnancy.

“We see so many success stories of women who worked hard during their pregnancies to manage their diabetes. When they come back with their healthy babies to visit our offices, the entire staff breaks out into smiles,” said Kris V. Iyer, M.D., senior vice president, chief administrative officer, HMTS.

In addition, the center is also offering the successful “Healthy Lifestyle Program,” a team-based weight management program that integrates personalized nutrition, exercise and behavioral change plans for people with prediabetes.

“With the right team in place working in partnership with the patient, diabetes is a manageable chronic condition,” Dr. Iyer said. “Our goal is prevention, management and maximizing wellness.”

Cardiac Catheterization Labs/Interventional Radiology Suites
Hoag’s ability to diagnose and treat heart and vascular issues, as well as interventional radiology needs has advanced at a staggering pace. Two first-of-their-kind suites are coming to Hoag Hospital Irvine, providing cutting-edge heart and vascular, and interventional radiology capabilities that deliver the highest quality imaging and minimally invasive options for Hoag patients. The unique cardiac catheterization labs/interventional radiology suites will offer higher quality imaging and minimally invasive options for Hoag patients.

Cardiac catheterization allows physicians to diagnose and treat heart conditions less invasively than surgery. Meanwhile, interventional radiology delivers precise, targeted treatment through tiny incisions in the skin, helping patients receive life-saving treatment while avoiding more invasive surgical options.

These suites provide Hoag’s dedicated physician teams with all the tools possible to care for the patient, in both elective and emergent cases.

The new suites are the first on the West Coast to offer this level of technology resulting in higher quality imaging with decreased radiation exposure for both patients and physicians.

“The purpose of upgrading the suites was to best serve both of these disciplines, and to ultimately provide the very best care to our South County patients,” said Angela Devlin, director of Hoag Cardiology Programs at the Jeffrey M. Carlton Heart & Vascular Institute.

Endoscopy Center
The opening of Hoag Endoscopy Center has brought Hoag’s outstanding endoscopy care model to a community that has long requested it.

Located at Hoag Health Center Irvine – Sand Canyon, the center offers outpatient services, such as colonoscopy, esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) and sigmoidoscopy. Conceived with physician input in order to ensure streamlined patient visits, Hoag Endoscopy Center was designed with patient comfort and convenience in mind alongside state-of-the-art equipment and technology.

“Hoag’s dedicated medical team is devoted to making the patient experience as comfortable and expedient as possible,” Brown said. “This level of personalized care truly sets Hoag apart.”
