Hoag Named Distinguished Epilepsy Center

Improving the quality of life for our patients and providing individual-centered care has long been the goal of Hoag Epilepsy Program.

Hoag’s steadfast dedication and commitment to this mission was recently honored by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers, which named Hoag a Level 3 Epilepsy Center for 2016-2017.

The designation is awarded to hospitals with the professional expertise and facilities to provide the highest-level medical evaluation and treatment for patients with complex epilepsy.

By using the best evidence-based practices, state-of-the-art technology and advanced research, Hoag continues to lead the region in epilepsy care and treatment.

“This designation is a testament to our expert team and specialized approach to diagnosing and managing epilepsy,” said David E. Millett, M.D., program director of Hoag Epilepsy Program. “With access to the most sophisticated diagnostic technology and imaging techniques, such as Pickup Family Neurosciences Institute’s Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, we can accurately identify a patient's specific type of seizure and the region of the brain where the seizures originate to help determine a personalized course of action for each patient.”

Those diagnosed with epilepsy — approximately 150,000 people in the United States every year — aspire for a life free from seizures and side effects.

Some patients may suffer seizures as the result of a brain injury or may simply have a family history of the disorder. In other patients, the cause is unknown. The background and dynamics of epilepsy are unique to each person, which is why Hoag’s program is custom-tailored to meet a patient’s specific needs.

Hoag’s comprehensive, multidisciplinary program uses a combination of the latest minimally invasive surgical techniques and drug therapies to devise the best plan that gives patients hope for a seizure-free life.
