Hoag Named a 5-Star Hospital By CMS

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., August 23, 2023 — Hoag announced today it is once again one of only 483 hospitals nationwide and the only hospital in the county to receive a 5-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) for 2023. This is the highest possible achievement of CMS’s Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings and is the second consecutive year Hoag has received this recognition.

“The rating is a testament to the concerted efforts Hoag has made to improve quality of care for our patients,” said Robert T. Braithwaite, Hoag president and CEO. “Hoag is pioneering a new paradigm of health care that will set the standard in Orange County, throughout Southern California and beyond. No other health system combines the world-class medical expertise and innovation of an academic medical institution with the agility and personalized care of a private, not-for-profit hospital system, creating “privademic” health care that empowers the people, partners and communities we serve.”

CMS assigns star ratings to hospitals across the country based on the performances in five quality categories: mortality, readmission, safety of care, patient experience and timely and effective care. This ranking system was created to help consumers easily compare hospitals to make more informed decisions about their care.

Braithwaite noted that Hoag’s score particularly stood out in terms of patient experience. Hoag received all eight of the quality measures in this category, and all seven of the measures in the mortality category.

“Hoag is known for its excellence and innovation, for providing the community with access to cutting-edge clinical trials and technology, but our patients are at the heart of what we do and who we are,” he said. “We are humbled to have been recognized for the care we provide, and we will strive to continue to serve as leaders in health care in Orange County and southern California.”
