Healing families as they overcome addiction

?While speaking out and seeking help for chemical dependency can at first seem difficult, families quickly find they are not alone.

For nearly 25 years, the Chemical Dependency Recovery Center (CDRC) at Hoag has been helping families confront the disease of addiction, find hope, heal and thrive.

“Once in treatment, families find the recovery process is about much more than one person’s abstinence from drugs or alcohol. The process of recovery is also a process of self-discovery and family reunification,” says Marshall Moncrief, Program Director of the CDRC. “The most rewarding part of our work is to walk alongside and witness these courageous families as the very problem that plagued them becomes a springboard for a deeper life experience.”

Like a hanging mobile, families are systems that by nature seek and find balance. When a loved one becomes dependent on alcohol, prescription pills or other drugs, the system is disrupted. In response, other family members begin to adjust their behaviors, often minimizing or denying their own painful experience, in order to stabilize the system. One of the distinguishing features of the Center is a week-long program dedicated to the family. The program is designed to help educate the patient and their loved ones about the complex disease of chemical dependency and to begin the healing process within the family. In addition, the recovery experience is enhanced by the “Hoag’s Heroes?” alumni group – a sober extended family made-up of prior patients and their family members. The group maintains a strong presence in the Center and in the larger community, providing many sober, social activities and fundraising events. Hoag’s Heroes is committed to supporting those active in recovery and welcoming patients and their families newt o the program into a thriving community. “I am aware of no other program that welcomes the newly sober family to such a large and loving army of alumni and volunteers. Hoag’s Heroes is the great strength of this program,” continues Marshall.
