Judy & Richard Voltmer Sleep Center opens: Serving the growing need in Orange County with comfort and style

Sleep loss is impacting the physical and emotional health of our country. Approximately one third of all Americans develop sleep disorders at some point in their lives, and the need for treatment has continued to increase in Orange County.

To meet the increasing demand, Hoag Hospital’s sleep center moved to a state-of-the-art facility with a beautiful, hotel-like atmosphere. The new and improved center

reopened its doors in August as the Judy & Richard Voltmer Sleep Center, located at Hoag Health Center-Newport Beach.

A generous gift from Judy and Richard Voltmer (pictured above), respected residents of Newport Beach, enabled the completion of the impressive 6,500 square foot center. In appreciation of the charitable gift, the center has been renamed the Judy & Richard Voltmer Sleep Center.

Improving the quality of life for those struggling with all types of neurological disorders is important to the Voltmers. They directed part of their gift to treat sleep disorders in the community because of the research linking sleep disorders to diabetes and many other conditions.

Design
The Voltmer Sleep Center was custom built with eight private bedrooms to conduct sleep studies. Each room has a private bathroom and is designed to feel like a high-class hotel from the wall décor to the Ralph Lauren linens. The rooms are spacious and appointed with an armoire, lounge chair, desk and flat screen television as well as black-out drapes to create a comfortable and sleep-conducive environment. Each room is individually decorated with local artwork depicting shore and beach photography for a soothing atmosphere.

Technology
In addition to the upscale design, the diagnostic equipment has been completely upgraded to state-of-the-art technology from Care Fusion, which meets and exceeds the American Academy of Sleep Medicine guidelines.

The new diagnostic equipment combines the “gold standard” quality of traditional polysomnography (a comprehensive recording of the physiological changes that occur during sleep) with the advances of digital technology, and allows Voltmer Sleep Center board-certified physicians and technologists to determine optimal treatment specifically for each patient. The technology upgrade includes a database system that tracks patients and interfaces with the hospital information system to streamline follow-up and aftercare, which provides an improved continuum of care.

Sustainability
The Voltmer Sleep Center? was built using sustainable practices by maintaining 95 percent construction waste management, which means waste was reduced through efficient use of materials. It was constructed to reduce environmental impact while optimizing water and energy usage. The center is designed to meet all LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification requirements for commercial interiors.
