Staying Flu Free

As we prepare for fall and the start of the flu season, Kevin Schachter, M.D., family medicine physician at Hoag Medical Group (HMG) reminds us, “flu season occurs between September and May, so it is not only a winter illness.” Influenza infection is a contagious respiratory illness ranging from mild to severe symptoms. Further Long Hua, M.D., internal medicine physician at HMG recommends, “the first and most important step to protect you against flu viruses is to get your yearly flu vaccine.” Below are some tips to help protect yourself and your loved ones during flu season.

  • Get a yearly flu vaccine which is available to anyone age 6 months and older.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, then wash your hands afterwards.
  • Avoid touching your face including your eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick to limit exposure to others to prevent infecting them.
  • Clean surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with viruses.

If you are sick and concerned about your symptoms, consult your physician for guidance. If you are experiencing increased shortness of breath, chest pressure, difficulty breathing, sudden dizziness or confusion, please seek medical attention immediately. To schedule your flu shot, contact your primary care physician’s office.
