Dr. O’Carroll earned both undergraduate and medical degrees from
University College Dublin Medical School. He completed residencies for
internal medicine at University Alberta Hospital in Edmonton, Canada,
and neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts.
He also completed a fellowship in neurophysiology at the Mayo Clinic in
Rochester, Minnesota.
As program director of Hoag’s Neurobehavioral Medicine Program, Dr.
O’Carroll has not only been instrumental in establishing a comprehensive
neurobehavioral program at Hoag, but is regarded as a pioneer in his work
to integrate conventional neurology with psychiatry. He is Board Certified
in Internal Medicine, Neurology/Psychiatry and Pain Medicine.
He began his private practice 27 years ago in Newport Beach and has been
actively involved in the community. Dr. O’Carroll has participated
in over 35 research projects, has authored several articles in professional
journals, and has extensive experience teaching and lecturing to hospitals,
conferences and universities.
Dr. O’Carroll is an associate professor at the University of California,
Irvine and has lectured to many societies and associations, including
all major hospitals in Orange County on headache and pain management.
Since 1992, he has been working extensively with Glaxo Wellcome, Inc.,
lecturing on Sumatriptan to physician groups throughout California and
served as spokesperson for Imitrex Nasal Spray in 1997.
Before joining Hoag as a program director, Dr. O’Carroll founded
The Headache & Pain Institute, served as the co-director of the Chronic
Pain Program at College Hospital, and currently serves as the director
of the Newport Pain Treatment Center.
