Hoag Heart and Vascular Institute is home to a highly-acclaimed Heart Valve Center led by Pravin Shah, M.D. an internationally recognized cardiologist with valve and echocardiogram expertise.

In addition, Hoag has a dedicated team of world-renowned cardiac surgeons led by medical director Aidan Raney, M.D., a nationally-recognized cardiac surgeon with extensive experience in valve repair. The team has received multiple cardiovascular surgery awards, including the "3 Star Award" for the best national heart surgeons by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, an award dedicated to the top 12% of heart surgery practices in the nation.

In addition, Hoag Heart Valve Center is one of the highest-volume surgical programs in the country with its cardiovascular surgery team repairing more heart valves than 90 percent of all cardiac programs in the nation.

Meet the Program Directors

Aidan Raney, M.D., F.A.C.C., is the medical director of cardiovascular surgery at Hoag Heart and Vascular Institute at Hoag Hospital Newport Beach. Dr. Raney is also the surgical director of Hoag Heart Valve Center and recipient of the James and Pamela Muzzy Endowed Chair. Along with his colleagues at Hoag Heart and Vascular Institute, Dr. Raney has built a team of surgeons, nurses and technicians that have been consistently ranked #1 in overall patient outcomes in Orange County and one of the top heart surgery programs in California.

Dr. Raney has been instrumental in introducing advanced surgical techniques and equipment to Hoag, and is well known for his expertise in the areas of mitral valve reconstruction, complex aortic valve/root replacement and the surgical treatment of atrial fibrillation. Pravin M. Shah, M.D., M.A.C.C.‚Äč, is the chair and medical director of Hoag Heart Valve Center at Hoag Hospital Newport Beach. In addition, he is the medical director of non-invasive cardiac imaging and academics program at Hoag Heart and Vascular Institute. He is active in post graduate education, and has directed more than 50 educational programs for the American College of Cardiology. His clinical and research interests include heart valve disease,hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, echocardiography with emphasis on intraoperative echo, as well as clinical diagnosis.
