Hoag Family Cancer Institute offers an extensive complementary care program to educate and support patients and their families who are facing one of life’s most difficult challenge.

Nurse Navigator – Sandy Southerland, BSN, RN, OCN

Clinical Nurse Navigators are a unique asset to Hoag’s comprehensive cancer program. The navigator serves an important role as facilitator and guide for patients, answering questions and providing support through each phase of treatment.

Hoag’s gynecologic cancer clinical nurse navigator provides:

  • Emotional support and guidance for the newly diagnosed patient and family
  • Education for patients and family members about gynecologic cancer
  • Information about community resources and Hoag support services
  • Help in coordinating the multidisciplinary care plan
  • Assistance in navigating the healthcare system during and after treatment

Classes & Support Groups

Classes and support groups provide mutual support and information for cancer patients and their families. Groups are facilitated by licensed clinical social workers and oncology nurses, and discussion is focused on current issues faced by cancer patients and their support network.

Patient & Family Orientation Class

Learn about support and resources available, and have the opportunity to meet with the cancer nurse navigator to receive guidance on medical concerns such as: how to understand your diagnosis or treatment, manage side effects, and ways to navigate the healthcare system. Occurs the third Wednesday of each month from 1-3 p.m.

Gynecologic Cancer Support Group

Designed specifically for women diagnosed with gynecologic cancer, whether in treatment or into survivorship. Join us for a confidential and safe discussion among other survivors. The Gynecologic Cancer Support Group meets the first Wednesday of each month from 6-7:30 p.m.

Caregivers Education Series

This program offers educational workshops to assist and provide strategies for caregiving. Occurs the second Tuesday of every other month from 1:30-3 p.m. on the third floor of the Hoag Conference Center.

General Cancer Support Group

Designed to meet the educational and emotional needs of cancer patients and their families, the General Cancer Support Group meets the second Wednesday of each month from 12-1:30 p.m.​ in the Hoag Family Cancer Institute, Conference Room A.

Recurrent & Metastatic Support Group

A newly formed group for patients living with recurrent and metastatic cancers, this group meets the third Tuesday of each month from 5-6:30 p.m. in the Hoag Family Cancer Institute, Conference Room A.​
