NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., November 29, 2016 — Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian has again been named one of the nation’s “50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals” by Truven Health Analytics™, an IBM ® Company providing information and solutions that seek to improve the cost and quality of health care. Hoag has received this national designation in back-to-back years, both 2016 and 2017, and was the only California community hospital to make the list.

According to Truven’s analysis, if all cardiovascular hospitals performed at the same level as the 50 Top Hospitals, 9,000 more lives could be saved annually, nearly 6,000 heart complications could be avoided, and more than $1.4 billion in healthcare spending could be saved.
Overall, some of the key performance benchmarks set by this year’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals include lower readmission rates, higher inpatient survival rates, fewer complications and shorter lengths of stay.
New to this year’s study is a five-year trend analysis of cardiovascular care. The analysis found significant improvement over the five-year period in a number of key quality measures, such as 30-day readmission rates and 30-day mortality rates for acute myocardial infarction (AMI).
To ensure fair, objective analysis of a hospital’s performance, Truven Health Analytics uses only public data sources and peer-reviewed methodologies for evaluations. The 18th annual review looked at 1,012 hospitals that provide medical and surgical treatment for heart disease. The list includes the 50 hospitals that scored highest on heart attack and heart failure treatments and coronary bypass and angioplasty surgeries.
