About Dr. Kerns

Kara Kerns, MD is a board-certified physician in internal medicine and palliative care. She earned her bachelor degree from Cornell University, before attending Temple University School of Medicine, where she completed her Doctor of Medicine.

Dr. Kerns then completed an internal medicine internship and residency at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine Montefiore Hospital, then went on to practice as a Hospitalist at Kaiser Permanente in Northern California. Following this experience, Dr. Kerns completed a fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine at Stanford Health Care in Palo Alto, CA. 

Prior to coming to Hoag, she practiced as an attending physician and assistant professor at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and Hospital in New York City, training the next generation of internal medicine residents and palliative medicine fellows. 

As part of Hoag’s Palliative Care Department, Dr. Kerns focuses on partnering with colleagues to ensure patient-centered care that encompasses the complex physical, psychosocial, emotional, and spiritual components of serious illness.
