Center is leading single-specialty Ophthalmology facility in Orange County;
Partnership between Hoag, physicians paves way for broad alignment around eye care
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – (October 14, 2014) —
Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian and Newport Bay Surgery Center, one
of the premier Ophthalmology surgery centers on the west coast, today
announced that Hoag has invested in the surgery center, creating a partnership
between the physician-owners and Hoag that paves the way for a broad alignment
around eye care.
The facility, located at 3333 West Coast Highway in Newport Beach, contains
three operating rooms and a host of state-of-the-art equipment for Ophthalmology
procedures, making it one of the most advanced and specialized centers
for eye care on the west coast. Opened in 2006, the center has more than
35 doctors on its medical staff, and performs over 5,000 procedures each year.
The investment by Hoag represents the latest in a trend of physician specialists
and hospitals aligning for more systematic and integrated approaches.
“We are excited to announce the new partnership with Hoag, which
has been in the planning stages for a long time,” said Lee Novick,
M.D., one of Newport Bay’s physicians. “This relationship
will strengthen our center and our doctors in ways that are meaningful
for our patients, especially with future changes to health care.”
Hoag’s decision to invest in the center continues the momentum, strengthening
its alignment with top physicians in the region.
“Hoag has always been privileged to be the hospital home for many
of the premier specialists on the west coast, and we are excited when
we can find ways to make those relationships stronger and more formal,”
said Robert T. Braithwaite, president and CEO of Hoag. “In many
ways, this announcement signals our continued commitment to partner with
and empower physician leaders to help guide and shape our path ahead.”
The announcement also enhances each party’s ability to address community
needs, and the challenges posed by changes in the health care landscape.
“Hoag is focused on meeting the needs of our community,” remarked
Braithwaite, “And while eye care is a service for all age groups,
it’s absolutely fundamental for our senior population, many of whom
view their ophthalmologist as one of their primary physicians. As Hoag
continues to evolve and grow as a leading regional health system and part
of the St. Joseph Hoag Health network, these relationships – with
the doctors and the surgery center – are very important.”
“Hospitals, health systems, doctors, surgery centers… all
of us must find ways to work more collaboratively together to meet the
needs of patients, employers, and insurers. We must be able to deliver
quality care more efficiently and with better patient service,”
remarked Trung Nguyen, a Newport Bay physician. “We’ve done
that very well since 2006 at Newport Bay Surgery Center, but the community
need is bigger than what we can do alone. Our hope is that this announcement
is only the first step toward a broader relationship with Hoag that truly
improves eye care throughout Orange County.”
The Newport Bay Surgery Center is the second surgery center that Hoag has
invested in with Sovereign Healthcare, a leading management company headquartered
in Orange County. Sovereign joins with Hoag in making an investment in
Newport Bay Surgery Center, and will, over time, transition into the day-to-day
management of the center. Progressive Surgical Solutions, which has managed
the center since its inception in 2006, will remain in its current role
in the near term. Sovereign will immediately begin providing strategic
guidance to the center and assist the physicians and Hoag with growth plans.
