Herbert Family Program for Young Adults With Type 1 Diabetes

The number of children and young adults with type 1 diabetes has doubled in the past 25 years and is expected to double again in the next 15-20 years. Young adults with type 1 diabetes represent an underserved population with much needed attention. Hoag’s Mary & Dick Allen Diabetes Center offer the Herbert Family Program which focuses on meeting the unique needs of young adults with type 1 diabetes (age 18-30s). The program addresses the financial, psychological, social and physical changes that challenge not only the young adult but also their family and support system.

“This period of adulthood is critical for ensuring the successful management of diabetes because this age group is faced with many changes and challenges as they move out of their parent’s homes, begin supporting themselves, embrace new lifestyles and support systems,”says Kris Iyer, M.D. ?executive medical director for the Allen Diabetes Center. “The Herbert Family Program helps young adults navigate through this challenging period by providing resources and a healthy support system and care.”
