Give Thanks for Healthy Foods

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, you might be wondering how you can enjoy some traditional favorites while staying healthy.

There are three things to remember: Control your portions, exercise and, when possible, replace fatty ingredients with healthier options in your favorite recipes.

To maintain a healthy portion control be sure to fill half of your plate with fresh greens, reserve one quarter for turkey and the last quarter is free for the more indulgent stuff, including stuffing and gravy.

Try to get in a bit of exercise by taking a walk between dinner and dessert or organize a friendly Thanksgiving basketball or flag football game.

Lastly, try switching some ingredients for healthier options and even leave out the carby mash potatoes for cauliflower mash. Below are some healthier Thanksgiving options:
• Pumpkin & Roasted Red Pepper Soup
• Harvest Pork Roast with Vegetables
• “Mock” Garlic Mashed Potatoes
• Asparagus with Red Pepper Sauce
• Cinnamon Pumpkin Torte
• Sugar Free Spice Cookies

Helpful Tips:
To lower your total carbohydrate intake, munch on low carb appetizers; choose veggies and nuts instead of chips and pretzels.

Have a small dessert at least two hours after finishing your main meal. This way you will still enjoy the sweets without overdoing the carbs in one sitting!

Keep in mind that some beverages like ciders, fruit punches, and hot chocolate may also contain carbohydrates. Drink more tea, coffee, and flavored water to accompany your meal!
