About Us

“We are encouraged by the better angels of our nature and the disposition of our hearts to think favorably of our fellows, regardless of their circumstances, and to serve them well; improving and sustaining their health and the quality of their lives and thus benefitting all.” said Dr. Gwyn Parry, founding director.

The Melinda Hoag Smith Center for Healthy Living (MHSCHL) is a collaborative endeavor, bringing like-minded organizations and non-profits under one roof. The MHSCHL allows providers to take an integrated, holistic approach to community services addressing everything from health care to legal services, to mental health and social support. The center is positioned to become a national model of integration, cooperation and effective community service focused on the vulnerable and under resourced communities.

The MHSCHL houses an impressive number of organizations that provide comprehensive services, including: Hoag’s Mental Health Center, SOS Children and Family Health Center, Newport Mesa Family Resource Center, and the SOS Beauchamp Children and Family Dental Center. To facilitate collaboration and build capacity in our community partner agencies, the MHSCHL provides non-profit partners with physical space and resources to operate out of. Located across from Hoag Hospital Newport Beach, a hoteling model is used so that partner agencies can rotate in and out of the center.

Ninety percent of maintaining good health is determined by factors other than direct health care. These “other” factors are referred to as social “determinants.” As the trusted partner in health and wellness, Hoag is uniquely positioned to step in and engage the community in a transformative partnership to positively impact the health and well-being of our community’s most vulnerable populations.

Hoag is taking an “upstream approach” to addressing key health determinants for our community. The Melinda Hoag Smith Center for Healthy Living represents synergistic model of service delivery. That means that Hoag is aligning with like-minded non-profit organizations that share in the vision of making the vulnerable community healthier. Many non-profit agencies do not have offices in Newport Beach, Costa Mesa, or Huntington Beach because the rent/leases are cost prohibitive.

To facilitate collaboration and build capacity in our community partner agencies, Hoag provides non-profit partners with physical space and resources in the Melinda Hoag Smith Center for Healthy Living. Located across the street from Hoag Hospital Newport Beach, a hoteling model is used so that partner agencies can rotate in and out of the center. A variety of health and wellness groups, classes and direct services are provided by our partner agencies.

Our Mission

Working synergistically in a shared location with our partner agencies and community residents to bridge the gaps in services, build capacity and maximize impact in our under-resourced communities.

Our Vision

Inspire and empower our community to take control of their own health and wellbeing. Provide culturally sensitive services and resources that enable prevention, address the root causes of disease and improve health outcomes. Offer services that meet the needs of the whole person: mind, body and spirit.

“We are encouraged by the better angels of our nature and the disposition of our hearts to think favorably of our fellows, regardless of their circumstances, and to serve them well; improving and sustaining their health and the quality of their lives and thus benefitting all.” said Dr. Gwyn Parry, founding director.
