Breaking Away from Dependence on Nicotine/Smoking

Nicotine dependence is the most common form of chemical dependence in the United States, and is just as addictive as heroin, cocaine or alcohol. It is a chronic condition that often requires repeated interventions, but effective treatment exists.
According to the American Lung Association, smoking contributes to approximately 90 percent of lung cancer deaths nationwide, making lung cancer the largest cancer killer in the United States, more so that prostate, colon or breast cancer deaths combined.

The fortunate news is that the sooner you stop smoking, the greater you reduce your risk for cancer or other complications. Although the health benefits are greater for individuals who stop at earlier ages, cessation is beneficial at all ages. While quitting smoking is not an easy task and may require multiple attempts, there are many resources available to assist you in your journey towards smoking cessation.
