Diabetology Fellowship
Overview
The Hoag Diabetology Fellowship offers advanced, comprehensive training in the management of complex diabetes and metabolic disease. Led by expert faculty at the Mary & Dick Allen Diabetes Center, the program equips fellows with deep clinical expertise across the full spectrum of diabetes care, integrating the latest advancements in therapeutics, technology, and population health.
Fellows gain hands-on experience in both outpatient and inpatient settings, managing Type 1, Type 2, and gestational diabetes, while working with continuous glucose monitoring systems, insulin pump technologies, and emerging treatment approaches. The program features flexible, individualized training pathways—including outpatient care, inpatient diabetes management, cardiometabolic integration, and population health—allowing fellows to align their experience with career goals.
Through multidisciplinary collaboration with cardiology, nephrology, gastroenterology, and high-risk obstetrics, fellows develop a holistic approach to chronic disease management. In addition, structured didactics, quality improvement initiatives, and participation in innovative clinical research—including trials in automated insulin delivery and novel metabolic therapies—prepare graduates to lead diabetes programs, advance care models, and improve outcomes for complex patient populations.

Examples of recent diabetes clinical trials at the Center include three automated insulin delivery system trials in the Type 2 Population (Tandem, Medtronic, and Sequel Twiist), retatrutide for obesity in type 2 diabetes, tirzepatide in the T1D population, a novel endoscopic procedure to manage T2D (Endogenex), and a novel GAD-65 antibody therapy (Diamyd) to delay the onset of diabetes. The program encourages innovative research that can contribute to advancements in diabetes care and management. All Hoag facilities, inpatient and outpatient, incorporate a common EHR (Epic), which facilitates health data management and enables opportunities for population health.
Fellows will participate in:
Bi-monthly inpatient glycemic council.
Weekly didactic teaching lectures by program faculty will cover advanced topics in diabetology, including the latest research, clinical practices, and emerging technologies.
