Keeping Kids Hydrated: Tips and Why It’s Important

    December 3, 2025 · 2 min read
    Child Drinking Water

We often think of hydration as something important for athletes or hot summer days, but for school-aged kids, staying hydrated is essential every day. Water plays a big role in helping children stay focused, energized, and feeling their best throughout the school day.

During active play, recess, or sports, kids naturally lose fluids through sweat. Without enough water, they can quickly start to feel tired, cranky, or unfocused. Even mild dehydration can impact their mood, memory, and concentration, making it harder to learn and enjoy school.

Proper hydration also supports digestion and helps maintain steady energy levels. When kids are well-hydrated, they’re more likely to feel good physically and mentally, both of which are keys for success in the classroom and beyond.

Elaine Gan-Yong, MD, a pediatrician at Hoag, shares tips on how to help your child stay hydrated throughout the school day:

Use a reusable water bottle. Choose a BPA free water bottle that’s easy to carry, durable, and leak-proof. A fun design or favorite color can also make it more appealing for kids to use

Build hydration into a child’s routine. Start the day with a glass of water at breakfast and offer another when they get home from school. These "bookend" habits reinforce hydration as part of their daily rhythm.

Pack water-rich snacks. Fruits like watermelon, oranges, grapes, and cucumbers can boost hydration naturally and are easy to include in lunchboxes.

Set gentle reminders. Some kids benefit from visual or verbal cues like a note in their lunchbox or a teacher-approved reminder on their desk.

Talk about why hydration matters. Kids are more likely to follow healthy habits when they understand why they’re important. Use age-appropriate language to explain how water helps their brain, body, and energy.

Model it yourself. When kids see adults prioritizing water, they’re more likely to do the same.

Water might seem like a simple thing, but it’s vital to how kids feel and function. Whether they’re learning new concepts in class or running around on the playground, staying hydrated helps them perform their best. Make hydration a priority, and you’re giving your child an easy head start for a healthier, happier school day.
