Meet the Team
Jay Puangco, M.D., ABMS, FAASM
Service Chief, Voltmer Sleep Center
Dr. Puangco is an innovative and forward thinking member of the Voltmer
Sleep Center. He is recognized as a Diplomate of the American Board of
Neurology and the American Board of Sleep Medicine. Dr. Puangco is very
active in the medical community and is affiliated with the American Academy
of Neurology, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and is a member of
the American Board of Medical Specialties.
Dr. Puangco brings extensive and well-rounded experience to the Voltmer
Sleep Center. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Texas
at Houston Medical School and completed an internship in Internal Medicine
at the University of Southern California (USC) and a residency in Neurology
at USC. He completed a fellowship in Electrodiagnostic Medicine and Neurophysiology
at USC and a fellowship in Sleep Medicine at University of California
Los Angeles.
While not seeing patients at the Voltmer Sleep Center, Dr. Puangco maintains
a private neurology practice in Irvine and is a neurohospitalist for Hoag
in Newport Beach and Irvine.
Ahmed El-Bershawi, M.D.
S Board Certified Sleep Specialist and
Service Chief of Hoag Sleep Center Irvine
Dr. El-Bershawi is the Service Chief of Hoag Sleep Center Irvine and a
board certified sleep specialist who is dedicated to the delivery of quality
patient-centered care with a comprehensive, individualized and cutting
edge approach. He is committed to providing high-quality care to patients
affected by pulmonary disease, sleep-related disorders or life-threatening
critical illness.
Dr. El-Bershawi completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the Medical
College of Wisconsin, followed by a fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical
Care Medicine at Kansas University Medical Center. Dr. El-Bershawi also
completed a fellowship in Sleep Medicine at the University of New Mexico
Sleep Center.
Dr. El-Bershawi is a diplomate of the American Board of Sleep Medicine,
and the American Board of Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine.
Yvette Gozzo, M.D.
Robert A. Moore, M.D.
Board Certified Sleep Specialist and Staff Neurologist
Dr. Robert Moore has been a physician at Hoag Hospital for nearly 20 years.
During his tenure, he has been a part of the Sleep Committee and the Ethics
Committee. Dr. Moore is also a key member of the staff at the Voltmer
Sleep Center.
Dr. Moore also holds numerous distinctions outside of Hoag Hospital including
being a Diplomat of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, National
Board of Medical Examiners and an Accredited Clinical Polysomnographer
since 1987. He is an active member of many organizations including the
American Academy of Neurology, Orange County Neurology Society, California
Medical Association and the Orange County Medical Association.
Dr. Moore maintains a private practice focusing on Neurology and is an
Adjunct Clinical Faculty member at the University of California, Irvine
Medical Center.
He received his Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Yale University
and went on to receive his medical degree in Neuroscience from the University
of San Diego in 1979.
Jason Muir, M.D.
Neurologist
Jason Muir, M.D. received his medical degree from the Keck School of Medicine
at the University of Southern California. Prior to medical school, Dr.
Muir graduated from Occidental College with a Bachelors’ degree
in Biology and a Masters in Neurobiology.
Dr. Muir completed a Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship at the Keck School
of Medicine at USC, with special emphasis on epilepsy evaluation and management,
sleep disorders and neuromuscular disorders. After completing an internal
medicine internship at State University New York (SUNY) Downstate in Brooklyn,
Dr. Muir returned to Los Angeles County-University of Southern California
(LAC-USC) Medical Center, the affiliated hospital for the Keck School
of Medicine. During his training he served as Chief Resident for the Department
of Neurology.
Dr. Muir enjoys a collaborative practice at Hoag Hospital, working closely
with fellow epilepsy and stroke specialists while serving as Program Director
of Hoag Neurophysiology Services.
He has initiated and organized a hospital-wide program to provide 24-hour
continuous electroencephalogram (EEG) services to critically ill patients
within Hoag Hospital’s inpatient facilities. Dr. Muir is a member
of the neurohospitalist service and stroke team at Hoag Hospital, and
currently serves as the vice chair for the Hoag Hospital Department of
Neurology and Psychiatry.
Carly Schrage, M.D.
Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery
As a general otolaryngologist, Dr. Schrage treats a wide variety of otolaryngology
conditions ranging from chronic sinusitis to snoring and sleep apnea to
facial cosmetic concerns. Dr. Schrage is a member of the American Academy
of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery, and the Orange County
Society of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery.
Dr. Carly Schrage earned her BA in Biology with Honors at Brown University
in Providence, Rhode Island and her MD at Northwestern University in Chicago,
Illinois. She went on to complete an Otolaryngology Residency at the University
of Colorado Denver before joining ENT Specialists of Orange County. Dr.
Schrage is a member of the Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha Omega Alpha, and Sigma
Xi honor societies. Dr. Schrage has a particular interest and received
extra training in the surgical treatment of sleep disorders.
