About Dr Melissa L. DeSouza
Bio
Melissa DeSouza, MD is a fellowship-trained foregut and bariatric surgeon specializing in minimally invasive and endoscopic treatment of esophageal and gastric diseases. Board-certified in general surgery with advanced training in laparoscopic, robotic, and endoscopic surgery, she is dedicated to advancing surgical education and delivering compassionate, evidence-based care tailored to each patient.
Dr. DeSouza earned her medical degree from Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, where she was elected into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. She completed her general surgery residency at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) in Portland, Oregon, where she devoted a dedicated year to improving quality of care for patients undergoing esophageal cancer treatment and bariatric surgery. During both medical school and residency, she received multiple awards recognizing her humanitarian contributions to surgical medicine.
Following residency, Dr. DeSouza pursued advanced fellowship training in minimally invasive and endoscopic foregut surgery at The Oregon Clinic. Her clinical expertise includes the surgical and endoscopic management of paraesophageal and hiatal hernias, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), Barrett’s esophagus, esophageal and gastric cancer, swallowing disorders such as achalasia, and both primary and revisional bariatric surgery.
An active member of several professional societies—including the American Foregut Society (AFS), Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), and the American College of Surgeons (ACS)—Dr. DeSouza is also a leader in clinical research. She has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters and regularly presents her work at national and international conferences focused on esophageal and gastric disease. Dr. DeSouza is passionate about delivering high-quality, patient-centered care and is committed to advancing the field of foregut surgery through innovation, education, and research.
