About Dr Matthew E. Wingo
Bio
Dr. Wingo’s passion for cardiac surgery is rooted in his early life in rural Mexico, where limited access to care meant that many people suffered from conditions that could have been treated. These experiences shaped his commitment to medicine and instilled in him a deep belief in the importance of bringing high-quality, life-saving care closer to home.
He is driven by the privilege of performing complex cardiac procedures and by the profound impact these interventions have on patients and their families. After supporting a loved one through major surgery, he gained firsthand understanding of what it means for patients to have exceptional care delivered with skill, compassion, and proximity. That perspective continues to inform his approach today.
Dr. Wingo was drawn to cardiac surgery because of its ability to restore health in immediate, meaningful ways. Whether replacing a dilated aorta, performing a coronary bypass, or combining multiple advanced techniques, he values the opportunity to help patients leave the hospital feeling dramatically better. He is known for his dedication, humility, and patient-centered philosophy, and he emphasizes collaboration across the care team to ensure that every decision supports the best possible outcome. His goal is to help each patient safely and confidently return to the life and activities they love.
Dr. Wingo earned his medical degree from the Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons, completed his general surgery residency at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York, and completed his cardiac surgery residency at Stanford, where he also pursued an advanced fellowship in transplant, mechanical circulatory support and aortic surgery. He brings extensive training from leading academic centers and is committed to providing world-class cardiac care to patients throughout Orange County and beyond.
Outside the operating room, Dr. Wingo enjoys exploring California with his wife and daughter through beach cruising, hiking and camping.
