Domenech Asbun

A board-certified surgeon, Dr. Asbun completed his surgical residency at UCSF Fresno and a fellowship in minimally invasive hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) and foregut surgery at Mayo Clinic Hospital in Florida. Before joining Hoag, he served as an assistant professor at the Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine and as program director of the Miami Cancer Institute HPB surgical fellowship.

Dr. Asbun's path to medicine became clear while working as an EMT, where he saw firsthand the meaningful impact health care professionals can have on patients' lives. Medicine also felt familiar, his father and grandfather were both surgeons, and their example helped shape his commitment to service.

He chose HPB surgery because he was drawn to the complex anatomy and intricate techniques involved in treating conditions of the liver, pancreas and biliary system. Today, he specializes in minimally invasive procedures, including advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgery. He values the opportunity to combine technical precision with thoughtful guidance for patients facing complex diagnoses.

Dr. Asbun is active on committees within several surgical societies and has presented at national and international academic conferences. He has published research in high-impact journals and has taught and organized surgical training courses in advanced techniques. His professional interests also include global surgery, fluorescence imaging and surgical education.

A listener by nature, Dr. Asbun believes in caring for every patient as he would a member of his own family. He takes time to understand each person's needs and priorities, then personalizes conversations and surgical recommendations accordingly. His work is driven by a deep appreciation for the trust patients place in him with their health.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Asbun enjoys surfing, traveling, exploring new cultures and, most of all, spending time with his wife and children.
