About Dr Aaron J. Ahearn
Bio
Dr. Ahearn always knew he wanted to become a physician, drawn to both the intellectual challenge and the opportunity to help others. Although he did not initially envision a career in surgery, he discovered a deep appreciation for its problem solving nature and the ability to directly restore health. His background as a competitive swimmer also prepared him well for the discipline, endurance, and precision required in transplant surgery.
Early inspiration came from his uncle, a medical oncologist, but a defining influence in his career was Dr. Nancy Ascher, a pioneer in liver transplantation. Her emphasis on excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement shaped Dr. Ahearn’s approach to patient care and surgical practice.
As Division Chief of Abdominal Transplant and Surgical Director of Liver Transplant of Hoag’s emerging liver and kidney transplant program, Dr. Ahearn is driven by the transformative impact of transplant medicine. He values the ability to take critically ill patients and help them return to full, healthy lives. He is equally passionate about the collaborative nature of transplant care, recognizing that exceptional outcomes depend on a highly coordinated, multidisciplinary team.
Despite the complexity of his field, Dr. Ahearn prioritizes clear and compassionate communication. Known for his resilience, Dr. Ahearn is committed to delivering outstanding clinical care while helping build a transplant program at Hoag that reflects both medical excellence and an exceptional patient experience.
Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his three children, especially staying active together and finding moments to recharge as a family.
