The Effect of Pre operative Meditation Coaching on Adoption of Meditation Practice, Peri Operative pain, Distress and Medication Use
What is the purpose of this study?
The goal of this study is to conduct a randomized trial of targeted meditation education in newly diagnosed breast cancer patients without previous meditation practice, to determine • the adoption of ongoing meditation practice • the impact on post treatment anxiety and distress • association between meditation practice and postoperative pain scores • association between meditation and analgesic use for post operative pain control
Eligibility
Females 18 years of age or older
Subject must be able to speak and read English
Newly diagnosed with primary breast cancer
Will receive primary surgical treatment for their breast cancer diagnosis.
Invasive breast cancer or DCIS
Recurrent breast cancer
Current or history of major psychiatric diagnosis with medication change within previous 12 months
Diagnosis of cognitive decline (Alzheimer’s, dementia)
Subjects who are receiving neo-adjuvant systemic treatment
Subjects with regular meditation practice within the past 12 months (defined as greater than thrice weekly practice)
Subjects unwilling or unable to complete study materials or comply with study visits
Subjects with no access to email or a mobile phone (required to access meditations)
Subjects undergoing surgery outside Hoag
Subjects who have narcotic dependence as defined by regular weekly narcotic use before cancer diagnosis.
