Prior Risk and Early Detection Of Multiple Sclerosis (the PREDOMS) study
What is the purpose of this study?
The objectives of this study are: • To identify biomarkers in healthy controls with high risk of developing MS to predict their risk of future development or early onset of MS. • To identify novel antibodies for early detection of MS. • To validate the RIMS index.
Eligibility
Inclusion Criteria for First Degree Group
1. Age 18-50 years old
2. Have confirmed biological full first-degree relative(s) with a confirmed diagnosis of MS
3. Documented diagnosis by referring physician or health record evidence of a first degree relative with MS
4. Ability to give blood samples regularly for the duration of the study
5. Ability to consent for the study including genetic testing
Inclusion Criteria for Healthy Control Group
1. Age 18-50 years old
2. No diagnosis of MS, any other demyelinating disease, any other neurological disease, any immunological disease, any active malignancy and no family history of MS
3. Ability to give blood samples regularly for the duration of the study
4. Ability to consent for the study including genetic testing
1. Previous demyelinating event or clinical documentation of abnormal brain MRI
2. History of any other autoimmune disease that is active
3. History of active malignancy
4. Pregnant subjects
5. Subjects receiving or have received any form of immunomodulating, immunosuppressant or chemotherapy in the 3 months prior to the study, for long term effect agents such as CD20 depleting therapies (6 months)
6. History of bone marrow transplant, chemotherapy or long-term effect immunosuppressants such as cladribine, alemtuzumab, cyclophosphamide, mitozantrone.
