Expert advice for common breastfeeding challenges

Expert advice for common breastfeeding challenges

Breastfeeding is natural, but that doesn’t mean it always feels easy. For many new mothers, the first weeks bring questions about milk supply, latching, feeding schedules and whether their baby is getting enough to eat. Sallyanne Gange-Brown, a Hoag International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and registered nurse, regularly meets with women navigating breastfeeding challenges. Though every mother's experience is different, Sallyanne offers the same reassurance to all of them: You're not in this alone.

“Lactation consultants help with everything from latching to milk production issues,” she says. “At Hoag, you also have the benefit of registered nurses who host breastfeeding classes for expectant mothers, which cover positioning, attachment and expectation in the early days.”

Below are some of the most common breastfeeding challenges mothers face, and Sallyanne’s advice for tackling each one.

Milk supply Many mothers worry about whether they're producing enough milk, especially in the early days and weeks following delivery. The best way to support milk production is through frequent breastfeeding and stimulation of the breasts.

“Additionally, skin-to-skin contact is of paramount importance because it can promote oxytocin release, which supports milk ‘let-down,’” Sallyanne says. “It's also calming for both mother and baby and helps strengthen their bond.”

Positioning Even mothers who breastfed one child without difficulty may have a different experience with their next baby, and positioning our babies can have a huge impact.

The two main positions in early lactation are the “football hold” and the “cross cradle,” which help support both breast and baby.

“Every baby is different, and many things can impact the position we choose, including the mode of delivery or even baby’s comfort in a position,” Sallyanne says. “So, if you're finding that your baby can’t achieve a deep latch, you may want to experiment with different holds. It may take a few attempts before you find what is most comfortable for both of you.”

Reading hunger cues Many new mothers wonder whether their baby is eating enough or is simply comfort nursing, Sallyanne says. While wet diapers and appropriate weight gain are the most telling signs of lactation success, recognizing feeding cues can provide reassurance in the moment.

“If you're wondering whether your baby is eating, listen for swallowing and look for signs of contentment after feeding,” she says. “As the journey progresses, our breasts will often feel softer after a complete feeding, too, and that's another sign.”

When to seek help Pain, nipple trauma, and ongoing milk production struggles are common, and mothers shouldn't feel they have to push through them alone.

    • Hoag's Lactation Support program offers one-on-one consultations with Hoag International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants who are also registered nurses.

    • Hoag's BabyLine is staffed by an IBCLC nurse who provides guidance, resources, and encouragement to mothers navigating the world of breastfeeding.

    • Through Hoag’s Nona app, mothers can consult directly with an online lactation consultant.

“There is a wealth of information about breastfeeding that is now available to every woman at every hour of the day or night,” Sallyanne says. “We're here to help.”
