Advanced breast imaging technology delivers detection without compression

Hoag is expanding its comprehensive breast imaging program this fall with the addition of the FDA-approved Koning Vera Breast CT, giving physicians another powerful tool to detect and diagnose breast cancer with greater precision and comfort.
Hoag Hospital Newport Beach is the first hospital in Orange County to offer the technology, which provides detailed 3D images of the breast without compression and with minimal radiation. The exam takes less than 20 seconds, creating a fast, quiet, and comfortable experience for patients.
“This new breast CT technology represents an exciting advancement in breast imaging,” says Dr. January Lopez, medical director of breast imaging at the Sue J. Gross Comprehensive Breast Center at Hoag. “While traditional mammography remains critical for breast cancer prevention and early detection, this technology gives our patients, especially those with dense breasts and breast implants, another important option.”
Breast CT is not intended to replace routine mammograms for most women. Instead, it complements Hoag’s comprehensive breast imaging program, which includes 3D mammography, ultrasound, and MRI, allowing care teams to recommend the most appropriate screening or diagnostic approach based on each patient’s individual needs.
The technology may be especially beneficial for women with dense breast tissue, breast implants or pacemakers, as well as women who have avoided mammograms due to pain or concerns about compression.
“Coupled with an intravenous (IV) contrast injection, breast CT can visualize patterns of blood flow within the breast, helping identify some breast cancers that may not be visible on conventional mammography or ultrasound. Our goal in investing in this technology is to improve detection of early-stage breast cancer, when treatment is most effective,” Dr. Lopez says. “By expanding our suite of leading-edge technologies, Hoag continues to reaffirm our commitment to providing the best possible care to our community.”
The addition of Koning Vera Breast CT was made possible through philanthropic support from Hoag Innovators, a group of philanthropists, entrepreneurs and community leaders dedicated to advancing innovation at Hoag.
By investing in emerging technologies alongside proven screening tools like mammography, Hoag is ensuring women in Orange County and beyond have access to some of the nation’s most comprehensive and advanced breast imaging services.
