Pyogenic Liver Disease
Overview
A pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) is a pocket of fluid that forms in the liver as a result of a bacterial infection. Instead of draining from the infection site, the fluid collects in a pocket inside the liver.
An abscess is usually accompanied by swelling and inflammation in the surrounding area, and can cause pain and swelling in the abdomen.
A pyogenic liver abscess can be fatal if it is not treated promptly.
