Women Deserve to Prioritize Their Health — Without Guilt

Between careers, caregiving, households and everything in between, women often carry a heavy load. It’s easy to lose sight of personal health when you’re focused on everyone else’s needs.

“All people can get bogged down in the busy day-to-day of life. Women, in particular, juggle so many responsibilities that can make it challenging to develop the good habits that promote positive physical, emotional and mental health,” said Sahar Naraghi-Babaei, LCSW, RPT-S, Manager at Hoag Mental Health Center.

Those good habits don’t have to be complicated, but they do take intention. Examples include:

  • Maintaining a regular exercise routine
  • Eating balanced, nourishing meals
  • Getting enough sleep
  • Setting boundaries and making time to recharge
  • Talking openly with trusted people about challenges and emotions
  • Practicing relaxation through activities like yoga, meditation, or massage
  • Tapping into creativity—whether through music, art or writing
  • Staying socially connected, both with old friends and new

If this sounds like yet another to-do list, take a breath.

“The common thread in both physical and mental health is recognizing your own needs,” said Sahar Naraghi-Babaei. “That might mean asking for help when you need it or making that wellness visit you’ve been putting off. You don’t have to do it all alone—and you don’t have to do it all at once.”

When it comes to physical health, staying on top of screenings and preventive care is essential. Key screenings include:

  • Mammograms
  • Cervical cancer screenings (Pap tests)
  • Colonoscopies
  • Bone density screenings (especially for older women)

If you have a family history of chronic conditions like heart disease or diabetes, work with your physician to stay ahead of potential risks.

At Hoag, we recognize that your mental and physical well-being are deeply connected. When one suffers, so does the other—and when one improves, so can the other. That’s why we offer support that meets you where you are.

Because prioritizing your own health isn’t selfish—it’s essential.
