Common Summer Foods That Could Be Causing Digestive Discomfort

    July 24, 2025 · 3 min read
    Watermelon heart

You might dream all year long about the funnel cakes at the OC Fair, but go easy on summer treats: Too much food-centered fun can lead to unexpected stomach issues. When the weather gets warmer, it is important to watch what you eat, when and how much.

How Does Hot Weather Affect Digestion?

High temperatures can affect how your body digests food. To help cool you down when you get hot, your body diverts heat to the skin – this can slow digestion. Meanwhile, dehydration can lead to constipation and physical activity can amplify discomfort. Adding to all that is the fact that foodborne pathogens love warm weather, increasing the risk of mild to severe illness.

What Popular Summer Foods Might be Causing Digestive Discomfort in the Summer?

There are a few summer standards that reliably wreak havoc on our digestive systems during this season of BBQs, fairs and family get-togethers. Here are a few to look out for:

    Culprit #1: Fried FoodsEmpty heading

While deep-fried food on a stick might sound delicious, too much grease can be hard on the stomach, especially when eaten in hot weather. Fried food might hurt your stomach because it sits in your digestive system longer, causing bloating and indigestion. To avoid fried food, opt for lighter fare at the fair – and everywhere.

Culprit #2: Carbonated Drinks and Sugary BeveragesEmpty heading

Sparkling waters, sodas and slushies introduce gas into the digestive system, which, when combined with sugar and artificial ingredients, can lead to bloating and discomfort. Summer is the perfect time to reach for refreshing infused water with cucumber, mint or citrus instead.

    Culprit #3: DairyEmpty heading

Ice cream, milkshakes and creamy dressings may trigger digestive symptoms, especially for those who are lactose intolerant. If you notice issues, try plant-based alternatives like almond milk or coconut-based frozen desserts.

Culprit #4: Spicy Foods and Processed MeatsEmpty heading

Hot dogs, chili cheese fries and deli sandwiches may be classic summer fare, but it’s best to enjoy them in moderation. Their high fat content, sodium and additives can lead to constipation, diarrhea and bloating.

    Smarter Summer Swaps

Want to enjoy summer without stomach pain? Remember to watch your sugar and processed foods and prioritize fiber and lean protein. Still not sure what foods to avoid in hot weather? Try these healthy food swaps:

    • Trade fried chicken for grilled chicken skewers

    • Replace soda with sparkling water

    • Choose a plant-based parfait instead of a milkshake

    • Try proteins like tuna, egg or hummus instead of hotdogs and other processed meat

    Track and TweakEmpty heading

Pay attention to how your body reacts. A food journal can help you spot patterns and identify trigger foods to avoid in hot weather. When in doubt, keep it light, fresh and hydrating.

If you’re experiencing frequent digestive discomfort, talk to your doctor. At Hoag, we offer comprehensive GI care with a whole-body approach to feeling your best this summer.
