Hoag Welcomes Cardiac Surgeon Matthew Wingo, MD

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (Feb. 19, 2026) – Cardiac surgeon Matthew Wingo, MD, has joined Hoag’s Jeffrey M. Carlton Heart & Vascular Institute, further strengthening its world-class team dedicated to providing advanced, compassionate care for patients with complex cardiovascular conditions.
Dr. Wingo comes to Hoag from Stanford University, where he completed two years of fellowship training in cardiothoracic surgery followed by a specialized year focusing on advanced aortic surgery, transplant and mechanical circulatory support.
He brings exceptional surgical expertise, passion and a personal connection to his work, said Jack Sun, MD, BS, MS, FRCSC, Director of Cardiovascular Surgery, Hoag’s Jeffrey M. Carlton Heart & Vascular Institute.
“After supporting a loved one through major surgery, Dr. Wingo developed a deep understanding of what it means for patients to receive exceptional care delivered with skill, empathy and proximity,” Dr. Sun said. “That perspective informs his approach to care and attracted him to Hoag.”
Dr. Wingo said he was drawn to Hoag’s privademic model of care.
“I deeply appreciate Hoag’s commitment to bringing the most cutting-edge, evidence-based treatment options to people today,” he said. “Hoag is known for its collaborative, multidisciplinary approach, which leads to better outcomes and higher quality of life for the people we serve.”
Having spent his formative years in rural Mexico, Dr. Wingo witnessed the devastating effect that limited access to care could have on people with chronic conditions. It instilled in him a conviction that people deserved world-class care close to home.
“I find it deeply satisfying and humbling to perform complex cardiac procedures that have an immediate and profound positive effect on people’s lives,” he said. “My goal is to help each patient safely and confidently return to the life and activities they love.”
Dr. Wingo earned his medical degree from the Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons, completed his general surgery residency at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York, and completed his cardiac surgery fellowship training at Stanford University.
