Treatment Options for Non Dysplasia

The main treatment in cases where dysplasia is not found is to focus on controlling the reflux disease. Typically, patients who develop Barrett’s have severe reflux with prominent symptoms, and often have a hiatal hernia as well. Often in these situations, medication therapy may not be adequate in controlling reflex disease. In these cases, an antireflux procedure may be an excellent option for controlling acid reflux disease and lowering a person’s risk for developing Barrett’s.

As a leader in minimally invasive surgery, Hoag-USC Surgical Center for Digestive Diseases provides two innovative procedures for controlling acid reflux:

  • LINX Reflux Management provides a permanent, medication-free solution to gastroesophageal reflux disease. As pioneers in this ground-breaking procedure, Hoag-USC surgeons are among the nation’s top experts in performing this breakthrough treatment for GERD.
  • Laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication is a minimally invasive surgery of the stomach and esophagus to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). During the procedure, part of the upper stomach is wrapped around the esophagus to reduce the damage caused by GERD. A hiatal hernia may also be fixed during the procedure, which is important since this type of hernia can increase the severity of GERD.

In addition, periodic follow-up endoscopic exams are generally recommended in order to monitor the cells in the esophagus for changes.
