Aidan A. Raney, M.D., F.A.C.C., is the medical director of cardiovascular
surgery at Jeffrey M. Carlton Heart and Vascular Institute at Hoag Hospital
Newport Beach. Dr. Raney is also the surgical director of Hoag Heart Valve
Center and recipient of the James and Pamela Muzzy Endowed Chair. Along
with his colleagues at the Jeffrey M. Carlton Heart and Vascular Institute,
Dr. Raney has built a team of surgeons, nurses and technicians that have
been consistently ranked #1 in overall patient outcomes in Orange County
and one of the top heart surgery programs in California.
Dr. Raney has been instrumental in introducing advanced surgical techniques
and equipment to Hoag, and is well known for his expertise in the areas
of mitral valve reconstruction, complex aortic valve/root replacement
and the surgical treatment of atrial fibrillation.
Under Dr. Raney’s direction, Hoag was one of the first hospitals
in Orange County to use minimally invasive video endoscopic vein harvesting
for bypass surgery and one of the first to perform mitral valve repair
using robotic-assisted technology. He introduced and has expertise in
minimally invasive valve surgery. Dr. Raney also has considerable expertise
in the surgical management of thoracic diseases, utilizing conventional
and video-assisted thoracoscopic techniques.
Since 1987, Dr. Raney and his partners have built one of the premiere cardiothoracic
surgical programs in Southern California. After graduating with honors
from the University of Southern California School of Medicine, he completed
his internship and residencies in general and thoracic surgery at Stanford
University Medical Center. At Stanford, Dr. Raney was extensively involved
in heart and lung transplant research, and served as the chief resident
of the Cardiac Transplant Unit.
His professional associations include: Fellow, American College of Surgeons;
Fellow American College of Chest Physicians; Fellow, American College
of Cardiology, Society of Thoracic Surgeons and International Heart Transplant
Society. He is a member of the International Society of Minimally Invasive
Cardiac Surgery. He is a diplomat of the American Boards of General Surgery
and Thoracic Surgery.
