Vaginal/Vulvar Cancer Risk Factors

Vaginal Cancer Risk Factors

Risk factors for vaginal cancer include HPV (Human Papillomavirus) infection, smoking, and previous treatment for cervical or vulvar cancer. In addition, if your mother took DES (Diethylstilbestrol), a medication used years ago to prevent miscarriage, while pregnant, you are at increased risk.

Vulvar Cancer Risk Factors

HPV is also a risk factor for vulvar cancer in young patients. In older women, risk factors include chronic vulvar irritation, smoking and HIV infection, which weaken the immune system, making you more prone to HPV infection.
