Having recently surpassed 15,000
robotic surgeries and serving as a pioneering leader in patient safety and technological
innovation for more than a decade, Hoag recently received a
Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery (COERS) accreditation from Surgical Review Corporation, an internationally recognized patient
safety organization.
Hoag is one of only two programs in the nation that Intuitive Surgical
utilizes for their Executive Enrichment Program. Executives, physician
leaders, and surgeons from all over the country come to see the program
that Hoag has built. The COERS designation further recognizes Hoag’s
commitment to excellence and continuous improvement in patient care.
“We are proud of the dedication of our physician leaders and grateful
to our philanthropic supporters who have made it possible for Hoag to
become a global leader in innovative care,” said
Robert T. Braithwaite, president and CEO of Hoag. “This advanced technology allows our physicians to consistently
deliver the safest, highest-quality care to our patients.”
Thanks to philanthropic support from the community, Hoag currently has
eight robots between its two hospital campuses, and is the first hospital
in Southern California to utilize the innovative
da Vinci single port (SP) robotic system allowing surgeons to perform complex urologic procedures through a one-inch
incision. Hoag is the fourth-highest volume provider of robotic-assisted
surgeries in the nation.
This year, the Surgical Review Corporation added a new category of Master
Surgeons that included specialties in thoracic (lung and
heart),
gynecology,
colorectal,
urology and general surgery. Hoag is a renowned leader in this exceptional field
of medicine, with 42 surgeons from eight specialties working together
to create a nationally recognized robotics program.
“Computer-assisted technology is becoming the standard of care at
Hoag in cancer, women’s health, cardiovascular conditions, general
surgery, colorectal, gynecology, urology, thoracic and others,”
Braithwaite said.
The COERS designation underscores the commitment Hoag has made to leveraging
technology to elevate patient safety. Only hospitals and surgeons who
demonstrate an unparalleled commitment and ability to consistently deliver
safe, effective, evidence-based care receive the national distinction.
Hoag’s program is structured to help robotic surgeons continuously
improve care quality and patient safety.
“Robotics have completely altered the landscape of surgical care
in the nation, and Hoag is a recognized leader in this new frontier,”
said Braithwaite. “Patients who in the past would not have been
qualified for surgery because traditional techniques were too invasive
are now routinely able to undergo life-saving procedures. Robotic-assisted
surgeries have improved outcomes, preserved quality of life and saved
lives in every specialty of medicine.”
