Preview: Cutting-Edge Heart and Vascular Suites in Irvine

In late 2017, Hoag Hospital Irvine began a project to replace two of its cardiac catheterization labs/interventional radiology suites. The suites are unique in that they allow specialized care for both cardiac and interventional radiology specialties in a shared space.

Cardiac catheterization is a procedure that allows physicians to diagnose and treat heart conditions by threading a long thin tube, called a catheter, through the groin or arm and into the blood vessels in a patient’s heart. Similarly, interventional radiology is an image-guided procedure that delivers precise, targeted treatment through small incisions in the skin, helping patients receive treatment while avoiding more invasive surgical options.

And by combining the two disciplines, Hoag’s Jeffrey M. Carlton Heart & Vascular Institute can now offer these procedures to residents of Irvine and the surrounding areas in one innovative location for both elective and emergency cases.

The new suites are the first on the West Coast to offer this level of technology and result in higher quality imaging with decreased radiation exposure for both patients and physicians.

The first of the two suites was completed in April, and the second suite is under construction now and will be completed by the end of 2018.
